Back in 2007 I was hurt while at work and had to go to the hospital for stitches. I assumed everything was okay because I signed the documents my work gave me, and heard nothing more. Now, I have a company called Money Recovery Nationwide calling me trying to college on this debt saying that I never paid it. I have a claim number for my workman's comp and everything. what do I do?
Contact your employer and ask why this work related medical bill was not taken care of. It's probably a case of the medical bill being miscoded or incorrectly submitted for the claim -- very common with medical bills. Subsequently, the medical provider just turns all unpaid accounts over to collections.
You may want to negotiate settlement with the collection agency to include a pay for delete -- you pay and they remove the item from your credit report. Then get reimbursed thru your employer's worker's comp. Otherwise, the debt could end up remaining on your credit report for the balance of the 7 year reporting period. Be sure to get any settlement agreement in writing and do not give the collector direct access to your bank account.
