hello!!
i am knitting hats for my nieces for Christmas. The hat has cables, and ear flaps. i have already changed the pattern to be in the round. I wanted to monogram the ear flaps for each girl so they can keep track of whose is whose. I already have it all mapped out on knitting graph paper and stuff, but i have a question. These flaps are supposed to be knit with garder stitch. do you have to knit in stockinette for a picture to come out clear when knitting with a chart? stockinette would make the flaps curl, do you think that i could do a purl border around it to keep it flat?

Have you noticed when doing color work the funky lines of color bumps on the purl side? The problem with doing color changes in garter stitch is that half of those funky color bumps wind up on the outside.
I like the suggestion to knit garter stitch for most of it and stockinette for the monograms, but if you do that I suggest doing one stitch of stockinette around the outside of the letter and filling in the spaces in any letter with stockinette as well. For example in the center of an R or A, fill in the hole with stockinette. Why? To avoid the dreaded funky color dots.
What I would actually do for this is double knit it, for several reasons. First, if you mix stockinette with garter you're going to get a little bit of a bulge in the stockinette area (the center) because stockinette stitches are larger than garter stitches. You'll get a nice smooth surface with double knitting. Second, double knitting is double thick, which would be nice to have on an ear flap anyway.
