If you don't want to buy a fat quarter or a quarter yard at a time, the best place to go is E-Bay - you can buy large numbers of 2 1/2 inch, 4 inch or other convenient sizes - oftentimes finding listings offering "no two alike", etc. which is exactly what you want for a charm quilt. Saves you a tremendous amount of money by not having to buy the larger pieces as well as having the convenience of the pieces already being cut to size.
In addition, check out gridded fusable fabric - I use Pellon - it's perfect for a charm quilt. You place the squares right side up on the rough side of the fabric using the grid as a guideline then iron in place. Once ironed on, you can then flip the fabric over and fold on the lines, sew a 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch seam along all vertical lines, trim the folded edge off VERY slightly to reduce bulk, flip and repeat for the horizontal lines. I made a gorgeous watercolor quilt - a quilt with a central design like a heart or cross surrounded by a light field of fabric then gradually increasing to darker shades as you get towards the edges. The best thing about this method: perfect points! And it looks like you pieced each square to the next then sewed all the rows together...
Only downfall: comes in 44 inch wide fabric so if you want to make something larger than a wall hanging or crib quilt, all you have to do is make panels or sections at a time then join them together.
