I had a house fire that destroyed everything back in 2004. We lost every stitch of clothing, every dish, every single thing we owned, even our family dog. Luckily none of the family was home when the fire broke out (just my poor doggie). It was so traumatizing. The thing is, it was 5 years ago and I still think of something every single day that I haven't thought of in a while and suddenly I realize, oh yeah, I lost that in the fire. It sucks because everytime I do that it's like I'm reliving that pain all over again. I know I should count my blessings, my son and my family are alive right. But I keep remembering sentimental things like today I remembered a cross stitch sampler that my sister sewed for me when my son was born, with his name and birth weight, etc on it. I hadn't thought of that in years, and I then realized I lost it in the fire. When will I stop remembering things I lost in that stupid fire?
Start creating new memories and document them. Create scrapbooks. Write down old memories, like that cross stitch and describe it along with a little sketch for your notebook.
For your own peace of mind, store backups of your digital photos on discs at a relative/friend's house. Or get doubles when your film is printed and again, store them somewhere else.
It's traumatic to lose everything at once. It's not like you grew up and your mom threw out all of your old toys. Speaking of that - look at garage sales or flea markets for toys or 'things' you used to have, that you want back (even if it used to belong to someone else).
