VESPR STRUCTURES HELP!- molecular geometry & electron pair geometry?

can anyone explain vespr structures to me simply?
for instance, how do you count how many "nonbonding" pairs an atom has?
i know how to count bonding pairs, you just add the bonds- and a triple bond still counts as ONE bonding pair, right?
also, how do you figure out both the molecular geometry & electron pair geometry from this information?
and also, how would you know the angle- pertaining to the molecular geometry?

VSEPR just explains how atoms form bonds to become molecules. There are bonding electrons, which participate in bonding, and non-bonding electrons, which DO NOT take place in bonding. An example of a non-bonding electron pair is a lone pair of electrons.

A single bond counts as one pair of electrons because each atom contributes 1 electron. 1 + 1 = 2 electrons.

A double bond counts as two pairs of electrons because each atom contributes 2 electrons.

A triple bond counts as three pairs of electrons because each atom contributes 3 electrons.

A lone pair of electrons is one pair because there are two electrons in a pair.

The molecular geometry of a molecule depends on how many bonding and non-bonding pairs of electrons it has. You can use a chart to determine this, try your chemistry textbook. Also, the angle of the geometry depends on the type of geometry. For example CO2 is O=C=O, which has linear geometry so the angle is 180 degrees. Carbon has 0 non-bonding electrons and 2 pairs of bonding electrons, so it's a linear molecule.
