how do you work out the magnification of a camera lens?

i have a sony a350 and currently have the 35-70mm kit lens, but was wondering how many times magnification it can go up to, because compact camera lenses have their zooms marked as (5x or whatevr) so what is the focal length in times magnification.

First, when a lens is advertised as "5x", that refers to the zoom range of the lens and not the magnification. 5x means that the longest available focal length is five times the shortest available focal length.

There are two ways to get magnification. The difficult way is to determine the closest focussing distance of the lens in mm (usually this part of the detailed lens technical specification). Then, the magnification is the ratio of the closest focusing distance to the focal length.

A simpler way set the lens for manual focusing, and then focus as close as is physically possible. Then, look through the viewfinder at a ruler. Use the ruler to measure the width of the field seen by the lens under those condition. The standard field width (for 35mm film) is 36mm (about 1.5 inches). If the field you see is, say, 52mm, then the magnification is 36/52, or about 0.7 times life size.
