How should I go about buying a golden retriever or labrador puppy?

My fiance and I would really like to buy a golden retriever or lab puppy, but aren't quite sure where to begin. Most of the prices I have seen on the breeding websites are way too expensive for us. I am looking for some information, if anyone has any, about what is a good price to pay and where is the best place to buy one.

There are thousands of Labs in rescue groups who desperately need homes. We probably have a dozen Labs a week killed in our local shelters because there aren't enough homes for them.

A lot of the rescues have puppies, too.

Keep in mind that Labs and Goldens need room to run and to exercise - make sure that your house is big enough and that you and your fiance' are committed to giving the dog the life that it needs and deserves.

One of the reasons that there are so many Labs in shelters is because people don't do their research before they get one, and they don't realize that Labs "stay puppies" for the first 2-3 years of their lives.
