Black Thread

I have black thread on the top.
Red thread on the bottom.
Everytime I go to do a normal straight stitch, or any stitch at all,
it stitches around one stitch, then the black thread falls out of the needle and it stops stitching.
How can I stop this? What am I doing wrong?
I can't seem to figure it out.
I'm sewing on felt, btw.
Either the needle thread is breaking (too much tension? Thread wrapped around something that it shouldn't be, increasing tension? (this is really common after a thread break... the backlash from the thread can get into some really odd places)).
Dig out your manual and rethread AFTER TAKING ALL THREAD OFF THE MACHINE. For what it's worth, the top tension should be set to about 4 for normal stitching. And double-check your manual to make sure the needle is correctly oriented.
Make sure you're using decent thread -- Coats and Clarks or Gutterman or such, not the 3/$1 bargain stuff (here's why:

You might be starting sewing incorrectly. Here's how to do it right-- this will keep the thread from making caterpillars at the beginning of seams, or pulling out of the needle.
1. Pull 6-8" of thread through the eye of the needle.
2. Fetch up the bobbin thread and pull out 4-6".
3. Raise the thread takeup lever to the highest point of its travel -- the thread take up lever is the little gadget that bobbs up and down in time to the needle, and is on the pillar above the needle. This step is not needed if you have a machine that automagically stops with the needle in a raised position each time.
4. Raise the presser foot
5. Pull the bobbin and top thread behind the foot. Use the handwheel to insert the needle into the work. Drop the presser foot.
6. With your left hand, hold the bobbin and top thread behind the work. Use the handwheel (turn it in the proper direction!) to make 1-3 stitches. Release the thread ends and continue to sew.
(Common beginner's issues you'll also run into: A. watch the edge of the fabric, not the needle. It knows what to do.
B. Guide the fabric, don't stretch it front and back, or push or pull it through the needle. The feed dogs move the fabric at the proper rate for the stitch length. C. putting the needle in backwards. This is probably the commonest cause I see for skipped stitches or none at all.)
